Everyday Hinglish vs IAST
The same sentence can be written in Roman letters in quite different ways, depending on who will read it:
- Everyday (Hinglish): नमस्ते भारत becomes "namaste bharat", and हिन्दी में becomes "hindi mein". Long vowels are written aa, ee and oo, but shortened where Hinglish usually shortens them: aa becomes a after the first syllable (bharat, not bhaarat), and a final ee or oo becomes i or u. Nasal sounds become n or m.
- Scholarly IAST: the same words become "namaste bhārat" and "hindī meṃ". Long vowels carry a macron (ā, ī, ū), retroflex consonants a dot below (ṭ, ḍ, ṇ), and श and ष are told apart as ś and ṣ.
- With every inherent a kept: भारत becomes "bhārata" and प्रधानमंत्री becomes "pradhānamaṃtrī", the form used for Sanskrit and strict ISO 15919 transliteration.
Everyday style also handles common Hinglish habits: अच्छा becomes "accha" rather than "achchha", and anusvara becomes m before p, b and m.
