Why metric and imperial still live side by side

Most of the world measures in meters and kilograms, but daily life is full of exceptions. Screens are sold in inches everywhere, tire pressure and body weight are often given in pounds, and many people in South Asia still give their height in feet and inches while their medical records use centimeters. Gold is priced per tola in Karachi and Delhi and per gram in São Paulo and Jakarta. Recipes from the United States use cups and ounces, while a Brazilian or Mexican recipe is more likely to use grams or a 250 mL cup. A converter that knows all of these saves a lot of guesswork.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate are the conversions?

Every factor is the exact legal definition where one exists: 1 inch is 2.54 cm, 1 pound is 0.45359237 kg, 1 US gallon is 3.785411784 liters and 1 imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters. The result is shown to 10 significant digits, and the quick table rounds to 6 so it stays readable.

What is the difference between KB and KiB?

KB, MB and GB are decimal units, so 1 KB is 1,000 bytes and 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. KiB, MiB and GiB are binary units, so 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes and 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Drive makers use GB, while many operating systems count in GiB, which is why a 500 GB drive shows up as about 465.66 GiB.

Why are there US and imperial versions of cups, pints and gallons?

The United States and the United Kingdom kept different definitions after 1824. A US gallon is 3.785 liters and an imperial gallon is 4.546 liters, so an imperial pint is about 20% larger than a US pint. The list labels each one clearly, and there is also a metric cup of 250 mL.

Can I enter a height in feet and inches?

Yes. In the Length category, choose Feet + inches in the From list and two boxes appear, one for feet and one for inches. Choose it in the To list instead and results such as 170 cm are written as 5 ft 6.93 in.

Is there a unit for tola?

Yes. The Weight category includes the tola, defined as 180 grains, which is exactly 11.6638038 g. It is widely used for gold and silver in Pakistan, India and the Gulf. The carat, 0.2 g, is also listed for gemstones.

Why isn't the marla or kanal in the list?

Because there is no single size. A marla is 272.25 square feet in land revenue records but 225 square feet in many housing schemes, and a kanal is 20 marla of whichever size is used. The quick table for square feet includes both 225 and 272.25, so you can convert whichever figure your document uses.

Does a month or a year mean a calendar month?

No. In the Time category a year is the average Gregorian year of 365.2425 days and a month is one twelfth of that, about 30.44 days. They are useful for rough conversions such as hours in a year, but for real calendar dates use a date calculator.
