The formula
There are two steps, because feet and inches are two units used together.
inches = cm ÷ 2.54, then feet = whole part of (inches ÷ 12) and inches left = inches − feet × 12.
Worked example for 182 cm: 182 ÷ 2.54 = 71.65 inches. Dividing by 12 gives 5 whole feet, which use up 60 inches. That leaves 11.65 inches, so 182 cm is 5 ft 11.65 in.

When you need your height in feet and inches
Forms and applications. US visa forms, driving licence applications, gym sign-ups and airline medical forms ask for height in feet and inches. Round to the nearest inch unless the form says otherwise.
Online profiles. Dating apps and sports rosters from the US and UK show height as 5'7" or 6'1". The first number is feet and the second is inches.
Buying clothes and gear. Size guides for bikes, skis, wetsuits and suits often list rider or wearer height in feet and inches.
