How to use the GPA calculator
- Choose a grading scale – US 4.0, Pakistan (HEC) or Custom. On the US scale, turn on "A+ counts as 4.3" if your college does that.
- Pick how to enter grades with Letter grades or Grade points, then fill in the credit hours and grade for each course. A course name is optional.
- Use Add course for more rows, or the bin icon to remove one.
- For CGPA, fill in "Current CGPA" and "Credit hours completed" under Previous semesters. Leave them empty in your first semester.
- Read your Semester GPA and Cumulative GPA below the courses. They update as you type, together with the total credit hours and quality points.
Features
- Credit-weighted GPA – a 4-credit course counts twice as much as a 2-credit course, just as it does on a transcript.
- CGPA across semesters from your current CGPA and completed credit hours.
- Three grading scales: the US 4.0 scale with plus and minus grades, the common Pakistan HEC-recommended table, and a custom scale editor.
- Custom scale editor – rename grades, change their points, add or remove grades. Your course grade lists update to match.
- Letter grades or grade points – choose grades from a list or type the points shown on your result card.
- Percentage to grade helper for a rough, clearly approximate conversion.
- Clear warnings for credit hours of zero, points above the scale maximum or duplicate custom grade names.
The grading scales
US 4.0 scale: A+ and A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7 and F = 0. The percentage bands used by the helper (93% and above for an A, 90% for an A-, and so on down to 60% for a D-) are a common convention, not a fixed rule.
Pakistan (HEC) table: A = 4.0 (85% and above), A- = 3.7 (80%), B+ = 3.3 (75%), B = 3.0 (71%), B- = 2.7 (68%), C+ = 2.3 (64%), C = 2.0 (61%), C- = 1.7 (58%), D+ = 1.3 (54%), D = 1.0 (50%) and F = 0 below 50%. This is the table commonly published as HEC-recommended. Universities adapt it, some use 3.67 instead of 3.7 or different bands, so check your own university's table.
Custom: start from the US scale and edit it into whatever your school uses, for example a scale where an A is worth 5 points. The result is then shown out of your highest grade.
A worked example
Suppose you took four courses this semester: Calculus (3 credits, A), Physics (4 credits, B+), English (3 credits, C) and a 2-credit lab you failed (F). The quality points are 12 + 13.2 + 6 + 0 = 31.2 over 12 credit hours, a semester GPA of 2.60. If your CGPA before this semester was 3.20 over 30 credit hours, your new CGPA is (96 + 31.2) ÷ 42 = 3.03.
Results are rounded to two decimal places. Some universities truncate instead of rounding, which can make the last digit differ by 0.01 from your official transcript.
Why use Fileora's GPA calculator
Working out a weighted average by hand is easy to get wrong, especially once you mix credit hours and add previous semesters. Here every step is shown: the credit hours counted, the quality points, and how many courses were included.
It is free, needs no sign-up and works on a phone as well as a laptop. Your grades never leave your device.
To see a mark as a plain percentage first, use the percentage calculator. Counting down to exams or a deadline? The date difference calculator tells you how many days or working days are left.
