How to convert JPG to PNG

Why convert JPG to PNG?
To stop quality loss while editing. Each time a JPG is opened, changed and saved, it is compressed again and a little more detail is lost. Blocky patches and halos around edges build up over several rounds. Converting to PNG before you start editing means later saves don't add any new damage.
Because a site or app asks for PNG. Some design tools, printing services, game mods and developer platforms only accept PNG uploads.
For graphics saved in the wrong format. Logos, charts and screenshots that were saved as JPG by mistake are best kept as PNG from now on, so they don't get any worse each time they're re-shared.
What converting can't do
It's worth being clear about the limits, because many people expect more from a format change than it can deliver.
- It won't sharpen a blurry photo or remove existing JPG artefacts. The PNG looks the same as the JPG you added.
- It won't make the background transparent. That requires cutting the subject out, which this tool doesn't do.
- It won't make the image smaller. For photos, PNG files are larger. If size matters more than lossless editing, keep the JPG or compress it instead.
A simple editing workflow
If you regularly work on photos, a lossless middle step keeps the final result as clean as possible:
- Start from the best JPG you have, ideally the one straight from the camera rather than a copy downloaded from a chat app, which is usually already recompressed.
- Convert it to PNG here.
- Do all your editing on the PNG: cropping, adding text, adjusting colours. Save as often as you like.
- When you've finished, export one final JPG for sharing, or keep the PNG if the image contains text or sharp graphics.
