When converting PNG to JPG makes sense
The most common reason is file size. Phone screenshots, images exported from design apps and photos edited in some programs are saved as PNG by default. If that image is a photograph or has lots of colour gradients, a JPG version is often several times smaller with no difference you can see at normal viewing size. The size readout after conversion shows exactly how much you saved.
The second reason is compatibility. Some upload forms, especially for job applications, exams and government services, only accept JPG or JPEG. Converting the PNG solves the rejection in seconds. If the form also sets a size limit, pass the result through the image compressor to hit a target such as 50KB or 100KB.
A third reason is sharing. Messaging apps and email handle JPG files well, and smaller files send faster on mobile data. Some apps also recompress large PNG attachments on their own, and doing the conversion yourself lets you choose the quality instead of leaving it to the app.
Finally, converting to JPG strips out any hidden data the PNG carried, such as text notes added by the program that created it, because the new file is built from the pixels alone.
When to keep the PNG
JPG isn't always the better choice. Keep PNG for logos, icons and anything that needs a transparent background, because JPG will fill it with white. Screenshots of code, spreadsheets or small text also look cleaner as PNG, since JPG compression can leave faint smudges around sharp edges.
