How to convert JSON to CSV

  1. Choose a direction: JSON → CSV or CSV → JSON. Press Try an example to see sample data.
  2. Add your data. Paste it into the left box, or press Open file to load a .json or .csv file from your device.
  3. Set the options. For CSV output, pick comma, semicolon or tab, and choose whether to flatten nested objects. For JSON output, pick a separator or leave it on Detect, and choose whether the first row is a header and whether numbers and true/false values are converted.
  4. Copy or download the result from the right-hand box. A summary shows how many rows and columns were produced.

CSV pitfalls when opening files in Excel

Garbled characters. If names such as لاہور turn into symbols, the file was read with the wrong encoding. The Excel-friendly download fixes this for most versions of Excel.

Everything in one column. Your Excel region expects semicolons. Switch the separator and download again.

Lost leading zeros. Excel may turn a postcode like 05400 or a phone number into a number and drop the zero. Use Excel's import wizard (Data, then From Text/CSV) and set that column to Text.

Long numbers in scientific notation. IDs longer than 15 digits can be rounded by Excel. Import them as Text in the same way.

Mixed columns. Objects don't all need the same keys. Columns appear in the order they are first seen, and a missing value is left as an empty cell.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JSON to CSV?

Choose JSON → CSV, then paste your JSON or press Open file to load a .json file. The CSV appears on the right with a count of rows and columns. Pick a separator if you need one other than a comma, then copy the result or download it as a .csv file.

What JSON shapes are supported?

An array of objects works best, with one object per row. A single object becomes one row, and an object whose only field is an array, such as a response like {"items": [...]}, is unwrapped automatically. Arrays of plain values become a single column called value.

What happens to nested objects and arrays?

With Flatten nested objects switched on, a nested field such as address.city becomes its own column called address.city. Arrays are written into the cell as JSON text, like [1,2,3], so no data is lost. Switch flattening off to write each nested object as JSON text in a single column instead.

Why does Excel show strange characters instead of Urdu or accented letters?

Excel often assumes an older encoding when it opens a CSV file. Keep the Excel-friendly download option switched on: it adds a small invisible marker (a UTF-8 byte order mark) at the start of the file that tells Excel to read it as UTF-8, so Urdu, Hindi, Arabic and accented letters display correctly.

Why is all my data in one column when I open the CSV in Excel?

In many European regions Excel expects a semicolon rather than a comma between fields. Choose Semicolon as the separator and download the file again. Tab is also available if you plan to paste the data into a spreadsheet.

Can it turn CSV into JSON?

Yes. Choose CSV → JSON and paste your CSV or open a .csv file. The separator is detected automatically, the first row is used for key names, and numbers and true or false values are converted to real JSON types. You can switch each of these off.

Can I create an .xlsx file?

No. The tool produces CSV, which Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers all open directly. If you need an .xlsx file, open the CSV in your spreadsheet program and save it in that format.
