Where lorem ipsum comes from
The text traces back to "De finibus bonorum et malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written by the Roman statesman Cicero in 45 BC. A passage in its first book begins "Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet", roughly "nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain". Printers and typesetters took that passage, dropped letters and words, and scrambled it into the nonsense we know. "Dolorem" lost its first syllable and became "lorem".
The source was identified by Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar, who recognised the rare word "consectetur" and traced it to Cicero. The text spread widely in the 1960s on Letraset dry-transfer sheets and later through desktop publishing software, which is why it remains a common default filler in design tools today.
When to use placeholder text, and when not to
Lorem ipsum is useful when you need to judge a layout without being distracted by words: choosing fonts, setting line length and spacing, testing how a card grid copes with longer and shorter blurbs, or showing a client the structure of a page before the copy is written.
It is less helpful once the content matters. Real headlines are often longer than placeholders suggest, product names don't wrap the way Latin does, and a page full of lorem ipsum hides problems with reading order. Swap in real copy as early as you can, and never publish a page with placeholder text left in. Filler text gives search engines and readers nothing of value, and a stray paragraph is easy to miss in a template.
Why use Fileora's lorem ipsum generator
It gives you exactly the amount of text you asked for, in the format you need, without pop-ups or accounts. The HTML option saves the dull step of wrapping paragraphs by hand.
Everything is generated in your browser, it's free and it works on a phone for quick mock-ups on the go.
To check the length of real copy once it arrives, use the word counter. If you need sample data rather than prose, format it with the JSON formatter or create test IDs with the UUID generator.
