How to create a URL slug

  1. Paste your title into the "Your text" box, or several titles, one per line. "Try an example" shows two sample headlines.
  2. Pick a separator: hyphen (recommended for web pages) or underscore.
  3. Adjust the options if needed: keep lowercase on, remove short words, keep non-English letters, or set a maximum length.
  4. Copy the slugs or download them as a .txt file.

Features

  • Clean slugs from any title, with punctuation and symbols removed.
  • Accents stripped so "Crème Brûlée" becomes "creme-brulee".
  • Symbols spelt out: & becomes "and", @ becomes "at".
  • Optional stop-word removal for a, an, the, and, or, but, of, to, in, on, at, for, with, by, is, are, was, how, what and why.
  • Maximum length that never cuts a word in half.
  • Non-English letters kept on request, with a notice if a line would otherwise end up empty.
  • Bulk conversion, one slug per line.

What is a URL slug?

The slug is the part of a web address that names a specific page. In example.com/blog/compress-pdf-to-100kb, the slug is "compress-pdf-to-100kb". It tells readers, and search engines, what the page is about before they click. A good slug is lowercase, uses hyphens between words, contains no spaces or odd symbols and stays readable when pasted into a message.

Here is what the tool does with a typical headline: "How to Compress a PDF to 100 KB – Free & Fast!" becomes "how-to-compress-a-pdf-to-100-kb-free-and-fast". With short words removed it becomes "compress-pdf-100-kb-free-fast". A maximum length of 20 gives "compress-pdf-100-kb".

Slug tips for SEO

  • Include the main topic people search for, but don't repeat it.
  • Keep it short. Long slugs get cut off in search results and are awkward to share.
  • Avoid dates and numbers that will change, such as years in evergreen guides, so the address stays accurate when you update the page.
  • Stick to lowercase. Some servers treat capitals as different addresses, which can create duplicate pages.
  • Don't change a published slug without setting up a redirect from the old address, or existing links and rankings will break.

Why use Fileora's slug generator

Writing slugs by hand leads to small inconsistencies: a stray capital, a double hyphen, an accent that turns into strange characters. The converter applies the same rules every time, and bulk mode is handy when you're importing many posts or products at once.

It is free, private and requires no account. Your unpublished titles stay on your device, and the tool works on a phone as well as a desktop.

To tidy your headline first, use the title case converter. If you need to see how a non-English slug looks inside a link, the URL encoder and decoder shows the encoded form, and the word counter checks your title length.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use hyphens or underscores in a URL?

Hyphens. Google's own guidance recommends hyphens to separate words in URLs, because underscores can join words together when a URL is read. Underscores are still available here for file names, database keys and systems that require them.

Should I remove words like "the", "a" and "to"?

Often, yes. Short words add length without adding meaning, so "how-to-compress-a-pdf" can become "compress-pdf". Keep them when removing them changes the meaning or makes the slug hard to read. The tool never removes every word, so a title made only of short words still gets a slug.

How long should a slug be?

There is no fixed rule, but short slugs of three to five meaningful words are easier to read, share and remember. Enter a number in "Maximum length" and the slug is shortened at a word boundary, so it never ends with half a word.

Can I create slugs in Urdu, Hindi or Arabic?

Yes. Turn on "Keep non-English letters". Browsers display these slugs in the original script, but when copied or shared they are often turned into long percent-encoded strings. Many sites use English slugs for that reason, even on pages written in other languages.

What happens to apostrophes and special characters?

Apostrophes are removed so "don't" becomes "dont" rather than "don-t". The & sign becomes "and", @ becomes "at", accents are dropped (café becomes cafe) and letters like ß, æ and ø become ss, ae and o. Other punctuation is removed.

Can I convert many titles at once?

Yes. Put one title on each line and each line becomes its own slug, in the same order, ready to paste into a spreadsheet or CMS import.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Slugs are generated in your browser and your titles are never sent to a server.
