How to use the tip calculator
- Type the Bill amount from your receipt.
- Choose the tip: press 10%, 15%, 18% or 20%, choose Other % to type your own percentage, or Fixed amount to enter the tip as money.
- Set Split between to the number of people paying, using the minus and plus buttons or by typing the number.
- Pick the options you want: Round each person's share up to a whole number, and Tip on the amount before tax with the tax from your bill.
- Read the result: what each person pays, the tip, the tip per person and the total, plus the tip as a percentage of the full bill.

A worked example
Five friends have dinner and the bill comes to 238.50, including 18.50 of sales tax. They want to leave 18% on the food and drink only, and nobody wants to deal with coins.
With Tip on the amount before tax turned on, the tip is worked out on 220, so it is 39.60. The total is 278.10, which is 55.62 each. With rounding turned on, each person pays 56 instead. Together they pay 280, and the rounding adds 1.90 to the tip, which comes to about 17.4% of the full bill.
Tipping customs at a glance
Tipping habits vary a lot, so treat these as rough guides rather than rules. In the United States and Canada, restaurant tips of 15% to 20% are standard, and a lot of staff income depends on them. In the UK, Ireland and much of Europe, 10% is typical for table service, and many restaurants add an optional service charge instead. In Pakistan and India, 5% to 10% is common in sit-down restaurants when no service charge is added. In Japan and South Korea, tipping is unusual and can even cause confusion.
Whatever the custom, check your bill for a service charge before you add a tip. If one is already there, the calculator's Fixed amount option is useful for leaving a little extra.
