How to compress a PNG

  1. Add your PNG files. Pick them from your device, drag them onto the box, or paste a screenshot straight from the clipboard with Ctrl+V.
  2. Choose the output in Save as. Same as original gives WebP with transparency and the biggest saving. PNG keeps the .png format. JPG suits photos with no transparent areas.
  3. Set a size goal. Enter a maximum in KB, or use Resize to limit the longest side – the most effective option when you keep PNG.
  4. Press Compress and wait a moment for each image.
  5. Check the edges and download. Zoom in with the before-and-after slider on text and outlines, then download one file or a ZIP of all of them.

Why compress PNGs with Fileora

Choosing the right output for a PNG

For websites and apps, keep Same as original. WebP is supported by every modern browser and keeps transparency, and it is usually a fraction of the PNG's size.

For a document, design tool or upload form that demands PNG, choose PNG and bring the dimensions down with Resize. A 2560-pixel screenshot rarely needs to be more than 1280 pixels wide in a report or presentation.

For photos that were saved as PNG by mistake, switch to JPG, or use PNG to JPG to convert a batch with transparent areas turned white. Regular JPEG photos are better handled on the Compress JPG page.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't a PNG be compressed with a quality slider?

PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel exactly, so there is no quality level to lower. A PNG can only get smaller by using fewer pixels (resizing) or by being saved in a format that allows lossy compression, such as WebP or JPG. This page offers all three routes.

Why did my PNG come out as a WebP file?

With Same as original selected, PNG files are saved as WebP. WebP keeps transparency, looks the same, and is typically 60–90% smaller than the PNG. Every current browser and most apps open it. If you need an actual .png file, choose PNG in Save as.

How do I keep the file as PNG and still make it smaller?

Choose PNG in Save as, then use Resize to cap the longest side, for example at 1280 px. Fewer pixels means a smaller PNG with the same sharp edges. If the original was saved by a program that stores PNGs inefficiently, simply re-saving it can shrink it too; if it doesn't, the original is kept.

Will the transparent background stay transparent?

Yes, as long as you save as PNG or WebP (including Same as original). Only JPG removes transparency, because the format can't store it – transparent areas would be filled with white.

Should I convert my PNG to JPG instead?

Only if it's a photo without transparency. Photos saved as PNG are often ten times larger than they need to be, and JPG fixes that. For screenshots, text and logos, JPG adds smudges around sharp edges, so WebP or PNG is the better choice.

Can I compress many PNG files at once?

Yes. Add all your PNGs – a folder of screenshots or a set of icons – and they are processed with the same settings. Download them individually or together as a ZIP.
