Excel to CSV Converter (XLSX to CSV)

Turn an Excel workbook into CSV files for databases, email tools, online stores and imports. Choose a sheet or convert every sheet at once. Your spreadsheet never leaves your device.

How to convert Excel to CSV

  1. Add your workbook. Drop an .xlsx file onto the box or tap to choose one. The sheets are read in your browser and listed with their row counts.
  2. Choose the sheet. Pick one sheet from the Sheet list, or choose All sheets (ZIP with one CSV each).
  3. Set the options. Pick Comma, Semicolon or Tab as the separator, choose how Dates should look, and leave Excel-friendly UTF-8 on if the file will be opened in Excel.
  4. Check the preview. The first ten rows and up to twelve columns of the sheet are shown exactly as they will be written.
  5. Press Convert to CSV and download your CSV file, or the ZIP when you converted every sheet.

Features

  • Reads .xlsx and .xlsm workbooks created by Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice or Numbers.
  • Every sheet listed with its number of rows, so you can see which one holds the data.
  • One sheet or all sheets, with all of them bundled into a single ZIP.
  • Comma, semicolon or tab separators; tab produces a .tsv file.
  • Three date styles: ISO, day first and month first, with times kept.
  • Correct quoting of cells that contain commas, quotes or line breaks, with Windows-style line endings that every spreadsheet program understands.
  • Exact long numbers, so account numbers and IDs keep all their digits.
  • Preview of the first rows before you download.
  • UTF-8 with an optional byte order mark for Excel.
  • Clear messages for old .xls files, password-protected workbooks and damaged files.

Why use Fileora to convert Excel to CSV

Spreadsheets often hold customer lists, salaries or sales figures. Fileora reads the workbook with JavaScript on your own device, so the file is never uploaded or stored. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit, and it works on phones as well as computers. Very large workbooks (over 100 MB) are flagged, since they depend on how much memory your browser has.

What changes when a spreadsheet becomes CSV

A CSV file is plain text: one line per row and a separator between the cells. That makes it readable by almost any program, but some things in a workbook have nowhere to go:

  • Formatting such as colours, bold text, borders, column widths and number formats is dropped. Values are written plainly, for example 1250.5 rather than Rs 1,250.50.
  • Formulas become their saved results.
  • Merged cells keep their value in the first cell only; the others are empty.
  • Charts, images and comments are not included.
  • Each sheet needs its own CSV file, which is why converting all sheets gives you a ZIP.

Choosing the right separator

Use a comma for most imports, databases and programming tools. If your version of Excel uses a comma as the decimal mark (common in much of Europe and Latin America), it expects a semicolon between cells, so choose that when the file is going back into Excel. Tab is handy when the data itself contains lots of commas and semicolons.

Next steps with your CSV

To turn the CSV into JSON for a web app or API, paste it into the CSV to JSON converter. Going the other way, the JSON to CSV converter turns an API export into a sheet you can open in Excel. If the CSV came from a report you also need as a document, the Word to PDF converter can turn the accompanying .docx into a PDF.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an Excel file to CSV?

Drop your .xlsx file onto the box above or tap to choose it. Pick the sheet you want, choose a separator and date style, check the preview, then press Convert to CSV and download the file.

Can I convert all sheets at once?

Yes. When a workbook has more than one sheet, choose All sheets (ZIP with one CSV each) in the Sheet list. Every sheet that has data becomes its own CSV file named after the sheet, and you download them together as one ZIP file. Empty sheets are skipped.

Does it work with old .xls files?

No. Only the modern .xlsx format (and macro-enabled .xlsm) can be read. If you have an .xls file, open it in Excel, LibreOffice Calc or Google Sheets and save it as Excel Workbook (.xlsx) first. The same applies to password-protected workbooks: remove the password and save again.

Are formulas converted?

The CSV gets the result of each formula, as last calculated and saved by your spreadsheet program, not the formula itself. CSV files can only hold values. If a formula showed an error such as #DIV/0!, that cell comes out empty.

How are dates written?

Choose the style under Dates: 2026-09-29 (ISO, the safest for databases and imports), 29/09/2026 (day first) or 09/29/2026 (month first). Dates with a time of day get the time added, and cells that hold only a time, such as 12:30, are written as the time alone.

Why do Urdu or accented letters look wrong when I open the CSV in Excel?

Excel may guess the wrong encoding for a CSV file. Keep Excel-friendly UTF-8 switched on: it adds an invisible marker at the start of the file that tells Excel the text is UTF-8, so Urdu, Hindi, Arabic and accented letters display correctly. Switch it off only if another program complains about the first column name.

Will my numbers change?

Numbers are taken from the values stored in the file. Long whole numbers such as IDs are kept digit for digit, and tiny floating-point leftovers like 0.30000000000000004 are cleaned to 0.3, the way Excel shows them. Currency symbols and thousands separators that were only formatting are not added.
