How to convert Hijri and Gregorian dates
- Choose a direction: Gregorian → Hijri, or Hijri → Gregorian.
- Enter the date. For Gregorian, pick a date in the date box. For Hijri, type the year and choose the month and day.
- Choose a calendar: Umm al-Qura (Saudi Arabia) or Tabular (arithmetic).
- Set local moon sighting from −2 to +2 days if your country's months start earlier or later.
- Read the result, shown in full with the weekday and the month name.
Hijri calendars explained
The Hijri calendar is lunar. Each month begins with the new crescent moon, and a year of 12 months is about 354 or 355 days, roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. That's why Ramadan moves earlier through the seasons each year. Year 1 AH is the year of the Hijrah, the Prophet's migration from Makkah to Madinah.
Because months depend on the moon, there is more than one way to set a calendar in advance:
- Umm al-Qura is Saudi Arabia's official calendar. It is set in advance using astronomical calculations, and is widely used for printed calendars and official dates.
- Tabular (arithmetic) follows fixed rules instead of the moon: odd months have 30 days, even months 29, and 11 years in every 30 get an extra day. It's predictable and handy for historical dates, but can drift a day from the real moon.
- Local moon sighting is how many communities, including in Pakistan and India, actually start each month: when the crescent is seen. This often puts the local date a day behind Saudi Arabia. The adjustment of up to 2 days lets you match it.
