Markdown to HTML Converter

Write or paste Markdown and get clean HTML instantly, with a live preview beside it. Copy the HTML, or download it as a complete web page.

Each line break becomes a <br> tag, like comments on GitHub. Normally a single line break is treated as a space.

Strips <script>, onclick-style attributes and javascript: links from raw HTML in your Markdown. Turn off to keep the HTML exactly as marked produces it.

The preview appears here as you type.

The preview is always sanitized: raw HTML in your Markdown is cleaned of scripts, event handlers and unsafe links before it is shown, and links open in a new tab.

Processed in your browser. Your code is never uploaded.

How to convert Markdown to HTML

  1. Type or paste Markdown into the left box, drop a .md file on it, or press Open file. Try an example loads sample release notes with a table and a task list.
  2. Set the options: Add ids to headings, Keep single line breaks, Remove unsafe HTML from the output and Download as a complete page with basic styles.
  3. Switch between Preview and HTML code above the right-hand box to see the rendered result or the markup.
  4. Copy the HTML, or press Download .html to save it as a file.

Features

  • GitHub Flavored Markdown: tables, task lists, strikethrough and automatic links.
  • Live preview that updates as you type, shown in an isolated frame that cannot run scripts.
  • Sanitized with DOMPurify, in the preview always, and in the output unless you switch that off.
  • Heading ids in GitHub style, ready for anchor links and tables of contents.
  • Optional line-break mode for chat-style or comment-style text.
  • Standalone HTML download with a light and dark stylesheet built in, or just the fragment.
  • Copy to clipboard in one click.

Why use Fileora to convert Markdown

Markdown is the fastest way to write structured text, but websites, email tools and many CMS editors want HTML. Fileora gives you both side by side, with no account and no upload. It is useful for README files, blog drafts, documentation pages, release notes and product descriptions.

Safety is built in. Markdown can contain raw HTML, and pasting someone else's Markdown into a converter that renders it directly could run a script in your browser. Here the preview is always cleaned first and shown in a sandboxed frame, so even hostile Markdown is only ever displayed.

Markdown quick reference

  • # Heading 1, ## Heading 2, ### Heading 3
  • **bold**, *italic*, ~~strikethrough~~, `inline code`
  • Links: the link text in square brackets, then the address in round brackets. Images: the same with ! in front, where the text becomes the alt text
  • - item or 1. item for lists, - [ ] task and - [x] done for task lists
  • > quote for a block quote, --- on its own line for a horizontal rule
  • Three backticks on a line before and after a block of code, optionally followed by a language name
  • Tables use pipes, with a line of dashes under the header row: | Name | Price | then | --- | --- |

Counting words for a post? Paste the text into the word counter. Need a clean URL for it? The text to slug tool makes one, and the HTML formatter will indent the converted HTML if you want to edit it by hand.

Frequently asked questions

Which Markdown syntax is supported?

The converter uses marked with GitHub Flavored Markdown switched on. That covers headings, bold and italic, links and images, ordered and unordered lists, block quotes, inline code and fenced code blocks, horizontal rules, tables, task lists with checkboxes, strikethrough with double tildes, and bare URLs that turn into links automatically.

Is raw HTML in my Markdown allowed?

Markdown lets you mix in HTML, and the converter passes it through. The preview, however, is always sanitized with DOMPurify first: script elements, event-handler attributes such as onclick, and javascript: links are removed before anything is shown. By default the HTML you copy or download is sanitized the same way. Switch off Remove unsafe HTML from the output if you need your HTML kept exactly as written.

What does Add ids to headings do?

It gives every heading an id based on its text, the way GitHub does: lower case, punctuation removed and spaces replaced by hyphens, so Getting started becomes getting-started. Repeated headings get -1, -2 and so on. You can then link straight to a section with a link like #getting-started, or build a table of contents.

Why do my single line breaks disappear?

In standard Markdown, a single line break inside a paragraph is treated as a space, and you start a new paragraph with an empty line. If you want every line break to appear, as in comments on GitHub, switch on Keep single line breaks.

What is in the downloaded .html file?

With Download as a complete page with basic styles on, you get a full HTML document: doctype, character set, a mobile viewport tag, a title taken from your first heading, and a small built-in stylesheet for readable text, tables, code blocks and dark mode. No external files are linked. Switch the option off to download only the converted HTML fragment.

Can I convert HTML back to Markdown?

No, this tool only converts in one direction, from Markdown to HTML. If you have HTML you want to tidy up before using it, paste it into the HTML formatter instead.

Are my notes uploaded?

No. Conversion, sanitizing and the preview all happen in your browser. Your Markdown is not sent to a server or saved, so drafts, internal documentation and private notes stay on your device.
