How to use the X character counter
- Choose your account type – Standard · 280 or Premium · 25,000.
- Type or paste your post into the Your post box, or press Try an example to see how links and emoji are counted.
- Watch the ring and the counter. The ring fills as you type, turns amber near the limit and red when you go over, and the line next to it tells you how many characters are left.
- Check the highlighted overflow. When your text is too long, an Over the limit box shows the part that doesn't fit in red.
- Split into a thread if you'd rather not cut anything. Keep Add numbers like 1/3 to each post on or off, then copy each post or the whole thread.

The counting rules, in plain words
X publishes its counting rules as part of an open-source library called twitter-text, and this counter follows them. The text is first normalised, so an accented letter typed as two parts is counted once. Characters from the main alphabets, together with ordinary spaces, dashes and curly quotes, weigh 1. Characters outside those ranges weigh 2. An emoji weighs 2 however it is built. A link is replaced by a short t.co address when you post, so it always weighs 23.
Link detection here is slightly simplified: any web address that begins with its protocol (http or https) counts, as does a bare domain such as example.com with a common ending. A bare country domain such as example.pk only counts as a link when it has a path after it, which matches how X treats them. If a very unusual address is counted differently, the box on X has the final say.

Tips for tighter posts
- Links are cheap when they're long. A 120-character link still costs only 23, so there's no need to shorten it yourself.
- Emoji cost double. Five emoji take 10 characters, which is worth knowing when you're a few over.
- Hashtags count too. Use the Hashtag Generator to pick one or two focused tags instead of a long list.
