How to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius

  1. Fahrenheit and Celsius are already chosen in From and To.
  2. Type the temperature in Value. Negative numbers work, so −4 is fine.
  3. Read the Result in degrees Celsius.
  4. Check the formula line to see each step of the calculation.
  5. Look at the quick table for common temperatures without typing.

Features

  • Correct formula for temperature, including the 32 degree offset that simple multiplying misses.
  • Negative values supported for winter weather and freezers.
  • Steps shown under the answer, useful for school work.
  • Reference table covering freezing, room, body, fever, boiling and oven temperatures.
  • Kelvin in the same lists for science problems.
  • Nothing stored. The value stays on your device.

The formula, step by step

°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9

The 32 is there because water freezes at 32 °F but at 0 °C, so the two scales start in different places. The 5/9 is there because a Fahrenheit degree is smaller: 180 Fahrenheit degrees separate freezing from boiling, against 100 Celsius degrees.

Example with 77 °F: 77 − 32 = 45, then 45 × 5 = 225, and 225 ÷ 9 = 25 °C.

Common temperatures

  • −40 °F = −40 °C (the scales meet)
  • 0 °F = −17.8 °C (home freezer)
  • 32 °F = 0 °C (water freezes)
  • 50 °F = 10 °C (cool day)
  • 68 °F = 20 °C (room temperature)
  • 86 °F = 30 °C (hot day)
  • 98.6 °F = 37 °C (body temperature)
  • 104 °F = 40 °C (high fever, heatwave)
  • 212 °F = 100 °C (water boils)
  • 350 °F = 176.7 °C (moderate oven)

When you need °F in °C

Weather. Forecasts in the United States use Fahrenheit. A day in the 70s is in the low 20s Celsius, the 90s mean 32 °C or more, and anything under 32 °F is below freezing.

Cooking. American recipes give oven heat in Fahrenheit. Common settings are 325 °F (163 °C), 375 °F (191 °C) and 425 °F (218 °C). Ovens are not precise, so rounding to the nearest ten degrees Celsius is normal.

Thermometers. Some medical and kitchen thermometers show only one scale. Converting the reading lets you compare it with guidance written in the other.

Science and travel. Lab instructions, appliance manuals and car dashboards from the US often quote Fahrenheit.

Why use Fileora's Fahrenheit to Celsius converter

You get the answer as you type and the working underneath it, so it is useful for learning as well as for a quick check. It needs no app and no account, and it runs in your browser on a phone or a computer.

To go from metric to American units, use the Celsius to Fahrenheit converter. Other US measures have their own pages: lbs to kg for weight and miles to km for distance. The unit converter holds every category together.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for Fahrenheit to Celsius?

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature, then multiply by 5 and divide by 9. Written out: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. For 68 °F, 68 minus 32 is 36, and 36 × 5/9 is 20 °C.

Is there a quick way to do it in my head?

Take away 30 and halve the result. 80 °F becomes 50, then 25 °C; the exact answer is 26.7 °C. The shortcut is good enough for weather and gets less accurate at oven temperatures.

What is 98.6 °F in Celsius?

98.6 °F is exactly 37 °C, the figure usually given for normal body temperature. 100.4 °F is 38 °C, which many health services use as the line for a fever. Follow medical advice for anything health related; this page only converts the number.

What is 350 °F in Celsius for baking?

350 °F is 176.7 °C, which recipes round to 180 °C, or 160 °C in a fan oven. 400 °F is 204.4 °C, normally rounded to 200 °C.

At what temperature are Fahrenheit and Celsius equal?

At −40. Minus forty degrees Fahrenheit is the same as minus forty degrees Celsius, the only point where the two scales meet.

Why is the result sometimes a long decimal?

Dividing by 9 rarely comes out even, so most Fahrenheit values turn into a repeating decimal in Celsius. Round to one decimal place for everyday use: 94 °F is 34.4 °C.

Can I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit here too?

Yes. The swap button reverses the direction, and Kelvin is available in both lists as well.
