How to make a passport photo
- Add your photo. Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF image onto the box above, or tap it to take or choose a photo on your phone.
- Choose the photo size. Pick 35 × 45 mm, 2 × 2 inches, 50 × 70 mm or Custom size and enter the width and height in millimetres.
- Choose the print sheet: 4 × 6 inch photo paper or A4 paper.
- Line up your face. Move and resize the crop box so your face sits inside the dashed oval, with the top of your head near the top of the oval and your chin near the bottom. The box keeps the correct shape for the size you chose.
- Press Make passport photo. You'll see the single photo and a preview of the print sheet.
- Download the photo for online forms, the print sheet for printing, or both.

Taking a photo that meets the rules
The tool handles the size and framing. The photo itself still has to meet your country's rules, and most of them agree on the basics:
- Background: plain white, off-white or light grey, with no pattern, objects or shadows. Stand a little away from the wall to reduce shadows behind you.
- Lighting: even light on both sides of your face. Facing a window in daylight works well; avoid overhead lights that cast shadows under your eyes.
- Pose: face the camera straight on with your head level, eyes open and a neutral expression with your mouth closed.
- Distance: ask someone else to take the photo from about 1 to 1.5 metres away, rather than taking a selfie at arm's length, which can distort your features.
- Glasses and headwear: many countries no longer allow glasses. Head coverings are usually allowed only for religious or medical reasons, with the full face visible.
- Quality: a sharp, recent photo in colour, not a filtered or edited one.
Take several shots and use the best one. Use the largest, sharpest version of the photo you have, because the crop keeps only the area around your head and shoulders, and a small image will look soft when printed. If the photo is sideways after transfer from your camera, rotate it first.
