Where WebP still causes problems
WebP has been supported by all major browsers for several years, but support outside the browser is patchier. You're most likely to run into trouble with:
- Older desktop software, such as photo viewers, image editors and office programs that predate WebP support or need an extra plug-in.
- Upload forms on job portals, exam and government sites, and older content management systems that only accept JPG, JPEG or PNG.
- Printing at photo kiosks and some online print services.
- Messaging and email, where a WebP attachment may arrive as a file to download rather than showing as a picture.
In all of these cases a JPG copy avoids the problem, because JPG has been the standard photo format for decades.
Why not just rename the file?
Changing the extension from .webp to .jpg doesn't convert anything. The data inside is still WebP, so programs that couldn't open it before usually still can't, and some will report the file as damaged. Upload forms that check the actual file contents will reject it too. A real conversion decodes the WebP image and saves the pixels again in JPG format, which is what this tool does.
The same applies in reverse: a site that says it only accepts JPG needs a genuine JPG file, and the converted file from this tool is exactly that, with a .jpg extension and matching contents.
JPG or PNG: which should you pick?
For photos, choose JPG. The files are reasonably small and open everywhere. For logos, stickers, icons or graphics with transparent backgrounds, switch the output to PNG instead, which keeps transparency and sharp edges.
